An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been advised to avoid talking about classified matters in any vehicles.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
During a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made vehicles.
The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern cars.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This broader defence situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, including vehicle use to discussions habits.
