At least 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
